The math behind the calculator.
The 4% rule
A classic FIRE rule of thumb: if you withdraw 4% of your portfolio per year, your FIRE number is your annual expenses multiplied by 25. This calculator keeps that rate fixed at 4%.
Monthly compounding
Your expected annual return is converted to a monthly rate. Each month, your contribution is added first and the whole balance then grows by that rate — month after month, until you hit your FIRE number.
Deliberately simple

How is my FIRE number calculated?
It uses the standard 4% rule: your FIRE number is your target annual expenses × 25 (the inverse of 4%). Your current savings and monthly contributions are then compounded forward at your expected return until they reach that number.
